In Memory

William Neal

William Neal

Dr. William Neal (1953-2017): Dr. William D. "Bill" Neal, age 63, of Olympia, died on January 5, 2017. He was born on July 31, 1953 in Portland, Oregon. He was a dedicated general and bariatric surgeon.

Following medical school at Oregon Health and Science University, he served in the U.S. Air Force for 16 years. In 1998, he moved to the Olympia, Washington area, first as a general surgeon at Mason General Hospital, then focusing on his bariatric surgery practice in Olympia. In his final years, he served in both positions.

He will be remembered for his genuine caring and compassionate nature. Above all, he loved his family and kept them close. He also loved oyster "farming," machine guns, cooking (mostly red meat), developing nicknames for others, his Yorkie Bella, 4th of July (fireworks), military history, fast cars, and head banging music. He put others before himself, had a great sense of humor, and never took himself too seriously.

Survivors include his wife, Lisa (Williams) Neal; children, Jessica Johnston (Aaron), Travis Neal, and Maya Neal; granddaughter, Isla Johnston; mother, Lu (Nolan) Neal; siblings, Kathy Bethurum (Larry), Dr. Richard Neal (Peggy), Sheri Shull (Bob), and Dr. Randall Neal (Leslie); and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. William R. Neal. A memorial service was held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 29, 2017 at South Sound Manor, 455 North St. SE, Tumwater, WA.

I've been in contact with sister Kathy and I made the comment that it must have been a remarkable family: father and three sons doctors and the two daughters nurses. Bill is one of many of our classmates who moved away after high school and went to college someplace else and never looked back. It looks like he packed it all into 63 years! I like to think that our educational system contributed to that somewhat. Many people have spoken so well about Bill. Class act the whole way. My deepest sympathies to his mother. It is not suppose to happen like this. Kathy said he battled something for two years. I don't know that it was cancer but it was something. I would think Dr. Bill researched it thoroughly.

So glad Bill had a full & dedicated life. He was a generous, smart guy that I remember fondly.
